Menopause is called Androgen Deficiency in Aging Men( ADAM ). Which is the lack of male hormones in older men. Currently, male menopause may start earlier, around age 45, so it has been called Andropause which means that male hormones stop working.

Causes of male menopause

The causes of menopause in men are different from women’s menopause in two ways:

1. The hormone that decreases and causes menopause symptoms in men is the male hormone called testosterone.

2. Testosterone levels will gradually decrease, although it starts at the age of 45-50 years. Some people may show symptoms, but some people may not show symptoms of hormone deficiency until after the age of 70 years.

Effects of male menopause

Lack of male hormones has quite a significant impact because testosterone is very important for the body. It is divided into 6 types as follows:

  • Related to the nervous system, it promotes systematic creativity.
  • Related to intelligence and emotions
  • Involved in building strong skin, muscles and bones.
  • Involved in blood cell production
  • Arouse sexual desire
  • Make the reproductive system such as testicles, prostate gland, penis complete.

Male menopause symptoms

Physically,  fatigue, sometimes hot, sometimes cold, sweating a lot, loss of appetite, body aches without any reason, not being energetic, muscles shrinking, no strength.

Mental:  Boredom, lack of motivation, sadness, loneliness, stress and irritability, anger, lethargy, increased complaining, increased resentment, desire to be alone, insomnia, decreased memory, especially short-term memory.

Sexual health:  Decreased sexual performance and sexual desire, or lack of sexual drive. Some people also experience erectile dysfunction.

How to care for menopause in men

Here are some ways to care for men’s health in both the short term and the long term:

  • Exercise: Move muscles such as arms, legs, and torso in a rhythmic, continuous, and repetitive manner, with moderate effort, for at least 30 minutes continuously or accumulate 10 minutes at a time, doing it every day or almost every day, such as brisk walking, jogging, cycling, swimming, or Chinese boxing.
  • Food: Eat a variety of foods from all 5 food groups. Add foods high in calcium to strengthen bones, such as milk, dried beans, small fish, green leafy vegetables, etc., and add protein from fish, making it easy to digest. Eat fruits to increase vitamin C and dietary fiber to prevent constipation, such as guava, oranges, bananas, and papaya.
  • Reduce stress. Learn to relieve stress by finding activities or hobbies that you like to do. Get enough rest. Look at things in a positive way. 
  • Consult health problems and have an annual health check at least once a year.
